Beechworth Baarmutha Trains - Geocaching Waypoint – Location

 

This micro cache can be found at the junction of Diffey Road and the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. It is ideal for cyclists using the Rail Trail but is also easily accessible for those travelling by car.

 

Here is some history on the location: The Everton to Beechworth railway line opened in 1876 and Baarmutha had its own station on the Lower Three Mile. The area was originally called Lee's Crossing but was renamed Baarmutha on 21st November 1904. It is interesting to note that during the 1920's two trains a day ran to the Beechworth Railway Station. The station closed on 30th June 1955.

Working together for Beechworth’s trees

Indigo Shire Council and the Beechworth Treescape Group have agreed that an Interim Consultative Group will work with Council on tree management in Beechworth until a permanent group can be set up. Indigo Shire Mayor Cr Larry Goldsworthy and the Chairperson of the Beechworth Treescape Group Jean Henderson today welcomed the move.

Beechworth The Royal Oak Hotel - Geocaching Waypoint – Location

 Located at the site of The Gap Hotel and later renamed The Royal Oak Hotel in 1886 this cache is a relatively easy find. The hotel stood in this location from around 1870through until 1958 when it burned.

 

This area is known as The Three Mile and spans from Buckland Gap Road to Diffey Road. At its peak the area had a population of 2,000, with a school, three hotels, six general stores and a collection of butchers and blacksmiths.
